“newspaper days”

back in my

newspaper days

detached objectivity

over drinks

in the ice-cool

air-conditioned

bar and grill

two blocks

city hall

that one horse

town

talk was

all stories

the people

in them

old pol

and the

closet

card player

that bar

never knew

real work

music man

drinking man

keyboard

sober

propped up

by guitar

man

concerned

keyboard

lady

tales

in those

times

not one

of us

in them

unwritten

rule

passed

no legends

here

all of us

young bloods

made reps

bigger

stories

big town

new town

every town

gone

way to

survive

meant

keep fingers

moving

set down

each sound

no

sense making

here

later

discovered

just couldn't

take it

needed own

story

small legend

here

much later

worlds later

few degrees

different

not legend

nor note

taker

new story

here

not really

words

for it

not special

position

wrote my

own story

left

new person

here.
