"Untitled"

the old dance played out in bus stations

nesting finally in New York

or the end of the résumé’s trail

in offices 15 floors up

or cubbyholes next the department’s chairman

the search committee’s final reward

the entrée, the promise, the prelude to seduction

the way-showers more adept each year

feinting prestige and surrogate power

seasoned practitioners of the deeper game

hiring for  brains and beauty

transforming ambition into the machine’s fuel

looking out from my window out onto Fifth Avenue

I read into glances, gaits and fashions

reflect on the influence of looks, age and aspirations

see the reactions of women and other men

know I’m not alone in rigging the game.
